The Chronicle

The inimitable Canberra Jazz duo In2DEEP combines the stunning vocal talents of Rachel Thorne with the pianistic and compositional abilities of Mike Dooley. The duo has been inspiring and soothing  audiences around Canberra and at regional festivals for several years, with a combination of renditions of the great jazz standards with their own sometimes swinging, sometimes soulful jazz originals.

Rachel was formerly lead singer of Canberra’s Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon and has shared the stage with numerous Australian celebrities, and has since had an extensive professional singing career with a number of top local acts, including the Smooth Operators and the Blamey Street Big band.

Mike originally studied composition at Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has travelled the world performing and composing, returning to Canberra 5 years ago. He has since produced several albums, including one for Sydney-Wollongong based blues and jazz Diva Pearl Noire, and his own instrumental jazz album “High Time”.

Their debut album “Just for the Heaven of it” is the culmination of those years performing together and contains 12 original jazz songs, many composed in the tradition of the great American song book and Latin Jazz classics, with a few eclectic ethnic influences introduced. From lyrical ballads to catchy duets with quirky lyrics, from summery bossanovas to lilting jazz waltzes, the album takes you on an emotional and delightfully escapist journey to distant shores and dreamy vistas.

The album was recorded at Canberra’s Hi-hat studios with an enviable line up of some of Canberra’s finest jazz musicians, including Mark Sutton on drums, James Luke on bass, Greg Stott on guitar, Dan McLean, Dan Bray, Richard Manderson and Valdis Thomman on horns, and some of Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s elite string players: Timothy Wickham and Anne Horton, violins, Iska Samson Viola and Alex Voorhooeve Cello.

The album will be available digitally on CD baby, in Canberra’s independent record stores and can be ordered directly from our website, or via email.
